Medication-blessing or curse?

Medication-Blessing or Curse?

Modern medicine can be an overwhelming maze, and medications are a major part of that maze. MediSort Medication Consultants, PA is here to help you through that maze.  Whether you're an adult child with aging parents who use a lot of medications, a Senior yourself, or a Geriatric Care Manager, MediSort is here to help you sort through your medication puzzle.

Our pharmacologists have had specialized training and experience in acting as medication consultants for a number of years. Dr. Brian Wolstenholme is a Board Certified Geriatric Pharmacist. (For an explanation of Senior Care Pharmacy and a full disclosure of degrees, training, and membership affiliations please see our About Us page.)

Everyone understands medications are a great tool of modern medicine. Pills and various medications help unclog arteries, reduce high blood pressure, relieve pain, and combat many illnesses- untold numbers of modern miracles are worked through proper medication use. Unfortunately, there's something wrong with our system.

Did you know that between 1983 and 1993 the number of medication error related deaths more than doubled? Based on Food and Drug Administration data medication related death, disabilities, and serious injuries almost tripled between 1998 and 2005. The majority of these medication errors affected the elderly population-those over 65.

Are you, or someone you love, at risk for medication-related problems?

It's very possible. A number of factors may put a person at risk. These risk factors include, but are not limited to:

Medications Taking five or more prescription medications

12 Doses Taking 12 doses or more of medicine per day

Medical Conditions Taking medication for three or more medical conditions

More than one physician Having more than one physician prescribe medication

More than one pharmacy Filling your prescriptions at more than one pharmacy

Certain medications may put a person at risk. These include digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps), phenytoin (Dilantin), warfarin (Coumadin), lithium (Eskalith), pehenobarbital, carbamazepine (Tegretol), quinidine (Quinidex), procainamide (Procanabid, Pronestyl), and theophyline (Theo-Dur, Theo-24, Slo-Bid, Theospan, Uniphyl).

Even for medical doctors medications can be a complex puzzle. Back in the 1960's there were basically 800 drugs available for prescribing doctors. Today there are approximately 9000 drugs and biologicals available. It's no wonder people feel as if they are lost in a maze!

For every dollar you invest in Medisort's services, there is an average return of $16. More is spent annually on medication related problems than on the drugs themselves-and that's approximately $200 billion a year. Please see our Services page to find out exactly what Medisort 's pharmacologists can offer you in the way of help with medication use.
